CHENNAI: The Madurai bench of Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that photos of both President and Prime Minister  appear in all advertisements related to the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, advertisements relating to the 44th chess Olympiad. Which is being organised in the state from July 28 to August 10.

A petitioner Rajesh Kumar had moved a plea before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking direction to include the photographs of the President and the Prime Minister in the advertisements and promotions made for the 44th Chess Olympiad. Advocate General R Shunmugasundaram argued that it was an international event wholly funded by the Tamil Nadu government and that the PM’s pictures were nevertheless published in invitations newspapers and advertisements. He added that the PM was invited to inaugurate the event and his photos were printed in promotional materials after he confirmed his participation.
The advocate general also stated that the Supreme Court order on photos of the PM and CM in government ads will not apply to an international event organised in association with the FIDE (International Chess Federation). The court also did not accept the reason that photograph of the Prime Minister wasn’t used due to receipt of consent from his office. The court said the photo of the Prime minister was to be published even if he could not have inaugurated the event.
The court also ordered the administration that no damage or destruction is caused to any advertisements containing the photos of the President and the Prime Minister and if such activities are reported strict action should be taken. With 187 countries participating, this will be the largest participation in any Chess Olympiad. India is also fielding its biggest ever contingent in the competition comprising 30 players across 6 teams.
“This is an event that can bring pride to a country of international importance but the ruling party (in Tamil Nadu) used it as an event for their political gain.
