Irom Sharmila announces formation of political party

iromsharmila-k2eb-621x414livemintIMPHAL : Rights activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who ended her 16-year long fast in August which she undertook to demand repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Manipur, on Tuesday formed a political party.

Sharmila said she would take on chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh in his constituency Thoubal in the assembly polls next year. The name of her party “People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance” was announced at the Johnstone Higher Secondary School in Imphal.

In August, when she broke her fast, Sharmila had announced her desire to form a political party to contest the assembly election. Speaking to media persons in Imphal yesterday, she said that she is entering electoral battle to fight against injustice after ending her nearly 16-year long hunger strike.

She said that name of the new political party will be Peoples Resurgence and Justice Alliance. Miss Sharmila further said her party will contest for at least 20 seats in the coming state Assembly election to be held early next year. She also named candidates for some seats.
