BJP stalwart, Sushma Swaral passes away at age 67

Sushma-Swaraj-PTINEW DELHI  In a shocking development, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday after getting admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi following a massive cardiac arrest. She was 67.
In the 2019 general elections, Sushma Swaraj decided not to contest due to health reasons as she was recovering from a kidney transplant that she underwent at AIIMS on April 2016.

According to reports, she was admitted to the Emergency ward and was in a very critical condition. Several Union ministers, including Nitin Gadkari, Harsh Vardhan and SS Ahluwalia, rushed to AIIMS.
Three hours ago, she congratulated the central government for its historic decision to abrogate Article 370. “Narendra Modi ji – Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime,” she said in her tweet,
The 67-year-old had not been keeping well lately, which is why she had not contested the recently held Lok Sabha election and opted out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new government.

Earlier this evening, Ms Swaraj had tweeted congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill in parliament.
The foreign minister — loved as much for her quick response to distress messages on Twitter as for her mellow sense of humour- had moved out of her official residence in June.
The same month, she had tweeted to dispel rumours that she had been appointed Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Her clarification came after Union Minister Harsh Vardhan triggered speculation when he congratulated her in a tweet.
A nine-time parliamentarian followed by nearly 12.8 million people on Twitter, Sushma Swaraj became the youngest minister of a state back in 1977.
She has been the chief minister of Delhi, and held the portfolios of information and broadcasting, and health in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“We are saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Smt Sushma Swaraj. Our condolences to her family and loved ones,” the Congress tweeted. Swaraj was one of the top performing ministers in the National Democratic Alliance government’s first term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
She was praised a number of times by PM Modi for being an “accessible” and “hands on” Minister of External Affairs. Her proactiveness on social media, especially Twitter, made her a household name.

Uphar Cinema Fire: SC Orders Jail For Builder Gopal Ansal

uphaar-fire_650x400_71426057560NEW DELHI : One of the two Ansal brothers, who built and operated Delhi’s Uphaar cinema, must go to jail within four weeks, the Supreme Court ruled today. He has reportedly been given a year-long sentence.
In 2007, a fire at the cinema left 59 people dead. Most of them choked to death after being trapped in the balcony. Basic fire safety rules had been broken – exit routes had been blocked to add more seats. The cinema was owned by Gopal and Sushil Ansal.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Gopal Ansal, convicted for June 13, 1997, Uphaar fire tragedy in which 59 people lost their lives, to serve one year jail sentence, of which he had already served four months.
The top court, by its 2015 verdict had enhanced the sentence to two years – the maximum under Indian Penal Code’s Section 304 (Causing death by negligence). But the top court had also let them off by asking the brothers to pay Rs 30 crore each, coupled with the sentence they have already undergone.

The verdict created uproar as Ansal brothers had individually undergone just five to six months imprisonment each. They were awarded two years sentence by the trial court but the Delhi High Court by its December 19, 2008, verdict had reduced the sentence to one year. Over 100 were also injured in the subsequent stampede.

Odd-Even Rule: Arvind Kejriwal says it’s impossible to continue

imagesNEW DELHI: Overwhelmed by the response of people to the odd-even car rationing experiment in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that the pilot initiative of the AAP government has turned “into a movement”. However, Kejriwal also said that it is impossible to continue the scheme permanently.
Kejriwal, in an interview toa News Channel said, “The odd-even formula in Delhi is not a permanent measure and will end on January 15, 2016. After that, we will reassess the situation and the future course of action will be taken based on our reassessment meeting.”
Stating that practically, it is not possible to implement the odd-even scheme permanently, he added, “We will continue to implement such a scheme whenever the pollution level is higher.”

200 teams of Traffic Police, 66 enforcement teams of transport department and 40 teams of sub-divisional magistrates were deployed across the city to ensure strict implementation of the scheme which is stipulated till 8 PM on week days.
An additional 3,000 buses have been deployed in the city as part of efforts to augment public transport. The metro has also decided to run 70 extra trips.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister said that as per initial reports, the plan has been “quite successful” and people in the national capital have largely accepted the restrictions with an “open mind”.

Delhi Odd-Even plan: Less traffic a relief but problems galore for daily commuters”Delhi will show the way to the rest of the country,” Kejriwal told reporters outside his residence.
Kejriwal shared his car to the Secretariat with transport Minister Gopal Rai and Health Minister Satyender Jain. They live in North Delhi’s Civil Lines area.
The first prosecution for violating the restrictions odd-even scheme took place at ITO junction around 33 minutes after the restrictions were implemented this morning.
While being imposed with the Rs 2,000 penalty, the offender told the police that he was heading towards his office and there was no convenient transport facility from Pari Chowk, the intersection between NOIDA and Greater NOIDA, which is close to his residence, said a senior traffic official.

BCCI reveals ‘real’ salaries of every IPL player alt By dna Web Team

manohar_2570836fMUMBAI: The Shashank Manohar led BCCI regimen might have been able to bring some transparency to the affairs of the Board but there still remains some ambiguity regarding the salaries of the Indian Premier League (IPL) players.
The Board on Friday revealed the actual contract amounts of the retained players and it has been found that players like Virat Kohli whose price tag was Rs 12.5 cr is in actual terms paid Rs 15 cr by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Which means at the auction the buying capacity of RCB is reduced by Rs 12 cr only, but after that they have to shell out the extra amount to Kohli.
Likewise Keiron Pollard’s price tag or purse deduction is Rs 9.5 cr while he gets Rs 9.7 cr and Lasith Malinga gets Rs 8.1 cr in spite of his price tag being Rs 7.5 cr. Harbhajan Singh may only have Rs 5.5 cr against his name as the price but but he receives a mammoth  Rs  8 cr from Mumbai Indians.
The problem with this kind of salary arrangement is that during the auctions teams like RCB get the advantage because if Rs 12.5 cr is deducted from their purse for Virat Kohli instead of Rs 15 cr, they get the chance of spending the extra Rs 2.5 cr on other players.

Also there is no information about the mode by which the extra money is being paid to the player/players in question. If that is not found out then there is no point revealing the salaries of the players as it would be like bunking a tough mission midway and coming back.
Incidentally there are players in the list like Steven  Smith who was bought by the Pune franchise for Rs 5.5 cr but his actual contract with Rajasthan Royals was for Rs 4 cr, so he will get that amount only from his new owners.
In the same way  Ravindra Jadeja  was snapped up by Rajkot for Rs 9.5 cr but as his contract with the now dissolved Chennai Super Kings was for Rs 5.5 cr, so he will have to be satisfied with that sum only. Brendon McCullum was virtually bought  for Rs 7.5 cr by the Bansal group but they will only shell out Rs 3.25 cr to him.
So as the situation stands, the purse for Pune and Rajkot got reduced considerably in the IPL players’ draft held in December, 2015. So for example, Pune’s buying power got reduced by Rs 5.5 cr where it should have been reduced by Rs 4 cr.
So now the franchise won’t be even able to spend that deficit of Rs 1.5 cr.
The silver lining for the teams who are in reality paying less than the price tag is that there actual pockets will have more money which they can spend in their business purpose.
However, there are players like Mahendra
Singh Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, (both Rs 12.5 cr), Ravichandran Ashwin (Rs 7.5 cr) whose purse deduction and actual salary is the same and there is no room for doubt. The BCCI thus need to go a long way in clarifying each and every detail of the medium in which the players are paid their IPL salaries.
Having said that, since the start of the tournament, this is the first time that the contracts of the cricketers are revealed, which will go along way in removing the stains of corruption from the scam tainted league.

Here is the full list of salaries of the retained players
