Manju-Verma-1PATNA : Days after the Supreme Court had rapped the Bihar Police for failing to arrest absconding former state minister Manju Verma, the politician surrendered before a court in Begusarai on Tuesday. Verma had been absconding and evading arrest in the Arms Act case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.
The former minister arrived in court in an auto-rickshaw. She fainted as soon as she entered the court premises. Ms Verma, however, regained consciousness after water was sprinkled on her face by bystanders. She was then taken to the the court room. The surrender came just two days after the Bihar Police concluded an operation to attach the former minister’s properties.
On November 12, the Supreme Court had come down hard on the Bihar Police for not being able to arrest the former minister and had asked the state DGP to appear before it on November 27 if the politician was not arrested by then. After the Supreme Court came down heavily on the state government for three successive days, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Ms Verma on November 1. “Is the former minister above the law,” the top court had asked during a hearing.
Verma had resigned as the minister for social welfare in August after alleged links between her husband Chandrashekhar Verma and Muzaffarpur shelter home case prime accused Brajesh Thakur. The CBI had later carried out raids at Verma’s residence in Patna and her in-laws’ home at Arjuntola village. In the raid at Arjuntola, a cache of ammunition was recovered by the CBI following which a case under the Arms Act was registered against her.
Her husband Chandrashekhar Verma had surrendered before a court in Begusarai on October 29. Last week, the JD(U) had suspended Verma from the party’s primary membership. More than 30 girls were allegedly raped at the shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur.
