Woman who was tortured by husband rescued
BANGALURU: A 30-year-old woman, who was allegedly confined and “tortured” by her husband at their residence in Moodalapalya was rescued by the police on Sunday.
Vijayanagar police said Shobha had been married to Venugopal (45), a small-time real estate businessman, around three years ago. However, the two immediately fell into marital dispute, with Mr. Venugopal accusing his wife of infidelity and over his alleged demand for dowry.
On Saturday, the argument turned violent, with Mr. Venugopal assaulting her, biting her repeatedly, and locking her in the room. Shobha managed to alert her neighbours, who then informed her parents. However, with the door locked, the parents could not enter the house. Mr. Venugopal allegedly abused and threatened them.
A group of neighbours, and police entered the house around 2 a.m., only to find a badly-injured Shobha lying in her room. While she was taken to a private hospital; Venugopal, who allegedly sustained injuries, in the scuffle with neighbours was also admitted to a nearby hospital.
Shobha told the reporters that Venugopal had harassed her for dowry. Even though Shobha and her family had filed a complaint previously with the Basavanagudi women police station, the couple reunited after they were “counselled” by the police. “He continued to physically assault me, even ramming my head against a wall in front of his parents… He didn’t let me meet my parents or use a mobile phone,” she said.
Vijaynagar police have booked a case under section 307 IPC (attempt to murder) against Venugopal. “We are waiting for Venugopal’s discharge after which he will be arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Labhuram.
