Rashmi Thackeray is Saamana’s new editor
MUMBAI : In a surprise move, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s wife Rashmi Thackeray has been named as the new editor of the “Saamana” group. Rashmi Thackeray is the chief minster’s wife.
The last page of the Sunday edition of the Marathi-language newspaper printed Rashmi Thackeray’s name as the editor, effectively making an announcement of the development. Senior Sena leader Sanjay Raut will remain as its executive editor.
Uddhav Thackeray was Saamana’s editor since 2012 when the then Sena chief and his father Bal Thackeray died. He resigned as the editor of Saamana on November 28, 2019, before taking the oath as the chief minister.
While the multi-edition Marathi ‘Saamana’ was founded on January 23, 1983 with the late Bal Thackeray as its editor, the Hindi ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’ was launched on February 23, 1993.
Saamana was founded on January 23, 1988, as a means to convey Bal Thackeray’s views to the people of Maharashtra. It also has a Hindi edition. It remains the platform through which Shiv Sena puts out its stand on political and development issues in Maharashtra and across the country and its views on other current events through editorials.
The Saamana group, run by Prabodhan Prakashan, includes the flagship dailies ‘Saamana’ and ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’, often referred to as Shiv Sena official mouthpiece, founded by the party patriarch Balasaheb Thackeray.
An announcement was made in the newspapers on Sunday by the group publisher Rajendra M. Bhagwat with names of the other Trustees as Subhash R Desai and Liladhar B Dake.
When contacted, a party leader said that since she has now been assigned the onerous responsibility, she will take it up earnestly, but declined to elaborate. However, the family’s close confidante Sanjay Raut and Rajya Sabha Member will continue to be the group executive editor and will pen his famed fiery edits and commentaries.
