Peter Mukerjea not coming clean on financial transactions: CBI
MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), investigating the Sheena Bora murder case, informed the local magistrate court that former TV honcho Peter Mukerjea has not come clean on the source of the money invested by him and wife Indrani in a fixed deposit account in the UK.
The agency produced Peter in the court on Monday, seeking an extension in his custody.According to the CBI, in the last three days of interrogation, Peter has not cooperated. Additional solicitor general Anil Singh said, “Peter has not been giving information about the source of the crores deposited into a fixed account by him and Indrani.
He has not been able to satisfactorily answer why he lied to his own son that he has personally spoken to Sheena.”The CBI informed the court that Peter has bases in various cities in India and abroad and to investigate his financial transactions it needs custody for 10 more days.
While arguing CBI’s point in the court, Singh said, “There are call records that show that Peter, who was in the UK when the murder happened, was in touch with Indrani before, on the day of the murder and after. The calls between the two were of 15-20 minutes, which were not there earlier.”
Singh argued further, “Both Peter and Indrani had gone to Goa just after the murder; there they tried to hack into Sheena’s account.”Peter’s lawyer, senior counsel Amit Desai, however, argued that Peter has been visiting the Khar police station since August, right from the time the case was registered and his wife was arrested. Desai also told the court that since the CBI took over the case Peter had been cooperating with it.
“There is nothing new in the fresh remand copy, all grounds of the CBI are the same as those in the first remand copy. The CBI has already filed a charge sheet… if Peter’s arrest is on the basis of the recorded conversation between him and Rahul, where Peter, according to the CBI, lied that Sheena is alive, why is that important conversation transcript not a part of the charge sheet?” questioned Desai.
He argued that the case was registered first by the Mumbai police in August and even then Rahul had submitted the said conversation to the police. Later, the CBI took over and arrested Peter on the basis of the same conversation, he added.
“The CBI wants to recover Sheena’s purse, ATM cards and mobile phone. Wasn’t the Mumbai police aware of these missing items? And why did it suddenly became so important for the CBI to seek Peter’s custody for it?”
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Mahesh Natu, after going through the arguments, granted CBI custody of Peter till November 26. The agency has taken him to Delhi for further probe.
