NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has issued his first order from the custody of the Enforcement Directorate. Is Delhi’s government running from jail now…? Amid the debate over whether Arvind Kejriwal can continue to serve as Delhi Chief Minister from jail, sources said.
Arvind Kejriwal has today issued his first order from the custody of the Enforcement Directorate. AAP leader Atishi said that due to ED’s custody, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal directed to provide adequate water tankers in the areas facing water shortage.
Besides, instructions have also been given to solve sewer problems.
Atishi said that he had tears in his eyes after reading the Chief Minister’s letter. She said, “Arvind Kejriwal ji has sent me a letter and an instruction. I had tears in my eyes after reading it. I wonder what kind of person he is… who, despite being in jail, is working towards the water and sewage problems of Delhiites. Only Arvind Kejriwal can do this, because he considers himself a member of the family of 2 crore people of Delhi.”
She said, “I want to tell the BJP that you can arrest Arvind Kejriwal… put him in jail, but you cannot imprison his love and sense of duty towards the people of Delhi. You leaders may be in jail, but work will not stop in Delhi.”
Atishi said in the press conference that Arvind Kejriwal considers the entire Delhi as his family.
In the first order issued in ED’s custody, Kejriwal said, “I have come to know that there are many problems of water and sewer in some areas of Delhi. I am worried about this. Since I am in jail, this Due to this, people should not face any problem. Summers are also coming. Where there is shortage of water, arrange for appropriate number of tankers. Give appropriate orders to the Chief Secretary and other officials, so that the public does not face any kind of problem.There should be immediate and proper solution to the problems of the people. If necessary, take the help of the Lieutenant Governor. He will also definitely help you.” The order was given through a note that was sent to Delhi Water Minister Atishi late yesterday evening.
Meanwhile, AAP has said there will be no change in leadership, even if it means Mr Kejriwal serves as chief minister from jail. The Aam Aadmi Party chief was arrested on Thursday in a corruption case related to the Delhi liquor policy and the next day the city’s Rouse Avenue court remanded him to the probe agency’s custody till March 28. The Chief Minister had yesterday urged everyone to continue working for the society and not hate anyone, even people from the ruling BJP. This message was read by his wife Sunita Kejriwal.
Sunil Gupta, a former law officer at Delhi’s Tihar Jail, says a prisoner can have only two visits a week, making it difficult for Mr Kejriwal to discharge his responsibilities as chief minister. The only measure that could facilitate Mr Kejriwal’s rule from within imprisonment was to put him under house arrest. The Lieutenant Governor has the power to convert any building into a prison, and if Mr Kejriwal can convince him to put him under house arrest – that would help him become part of the day-to-day functioning of the Delhi government. Sunil Gupta said, “The administrator has the right to declare any building as a jail.”
