Congress Working Committee meet begins; decision possible on Rahul Gandhi’s elevation
NEW DELHI : In the wake of a string of poll debacles in several states, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is holding a crucial meet here on Tuesday.
The meet, which began at around 10:30 am, is being chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters 24, Akbar Road.
While the CWC is expected to discuss the national roadmap for the party, as well as the upcoming elections in Delhi, it is believed that a crucial decision as regards party vice-president Rahul Gandhi may also be taken.
Reports suggest that Rahul could be elevated to the post of Congress president at today’s meet, as has been the demand of several party leaders wanting to see him lead the party. However, party sources denied that any such news was in the offing.
The meeting is being held not long after Sonia Gandhi wrote to state party leaders seeking their inputs on reorganising the party in the wake of poll routs at the Centre as well as in states like Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Apart from the internal party issues, the current political situation in the country is also likely to be discussed threadbare. Policy decisions taken by the Narendra Modi government, including issuance of several Ordinances, are also likely to be debated upon at the meet.
All top Congress leaders, apart from Rahul and Sonia, would attend the meet.
