As Mamata still stands by Pal, she risks erosion of Bengal’s image nationally
KOLKATA: Even as Lok Sabha’s stunning success in just concluded general elections blinds West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party in firmly deciding to stand by party’s MP Tapas Pal’s `vulgar public speech in June this year,’ political observers here believe, the stand has set TMC onto the path of slow yet steady erosion of popularity.
As for example, after a single bench direction to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe into Pal’s June speech and asking Police to file a FIR against Pal, TMC moved Division Bench of Calcutta High Court today which helped TMC to keep off FIR filing operation till 2.00 pm tomorrow.
“Banerjee may gain with rural and urban school and college dropouts (number is huge), but not with educated men and women of Bengal as her stand would darken the image of Bengal in India,’’ said a highly respected political commentator who waged a war against erstwhile CPI(M)-led Left Front Government’s education policy and violation of human rights for decades.
“She was also encouraged by almost no opposition in the state and take everyone for granted,’’ he added.
The TMC’s stand would also act as double-edged blade: “her stand on Pal’s issuing threats to women with rape and opposition party workers with revolver, only would encourage miscreants and criminals to perpetuate violence against women in both rural and urban Bengal which had been abused by CPI(M) cardres for a little more than three decades, added a political observer.
With a weak opposition and indifferent Parliament, “she still has the guts to stand by Pal and back him,’’ admitted a Left leader.
Paradoxically, Banerjee who often blames media and `opposition-inspired reports’ as conspiracy against her Government, couldn’t repeat her allegations but had to condemn Pal but excused him on his mere verbal apology.
