Journalist killed in Mumbai
MUMBAI: A Mumbai-based journalist was allegedly killed and his fellow scribes were assaulted by the staffers of a Thane bar where they had gone to cover a police raid on Friday.
The body Raghavendra Dube, who went missing after the attack, was found some distance away from the bar soon after the alleged attack.In less than 24 hours, three cases of attacks have been reported — one each in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.
According to the police, initially Santosh Mishra and Shashi Sharma, who work for a local magazine had gone to the White House bar in Naya Nagar, Thane district, where a police raid was on. Even as they were clicking photographs of the raid, they were allegedly attacked by staff of the bar.
After the assault on Mr. Mishra and Mr. Sharma, Mr. Dube reached the spot for coverage and then to Mira Road police station. Soon after he left the police station in the early hours of Friday, police was informed about a body lying near S.K. Stone on the Mira-Bhayander road, which turned out to be Mr. Dube’s.
Journalists across Mumbai have demanded action against the culprits.The Opposition has also supported the demand for a law to protect journalists. Friday’s attacks are likely to put more pressure on the Devendra Fadnsvis government.
