MCD launches sanitation and health drive with SARD and UK NGO
NEW DELHI: In a unique initiative, a Delhi-based NGO Society for All Round Development (SARD) on Friday collaborated with Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and UK based global NGO Water Aid to launch a month long sanitation and health drive Swacch Delhi and Swaasth Delhi in 200 MCD schools and 30 resettlement colonies in the capital.
This will be done though a Van decorated with WASH messages and musical performances and street plays.The campaign which took off at city’s Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Center on March 20 will give a huge fillip to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Speaking on the occasion Sudhir Bhatnagar, CEO, Society of All Round Development said, “Along with right to education we have today launched right to sanitation which will improve the quality of health in these schools and the sounding areas. Earlier also SARD has launched many health and other programs in these areas. This programme has assumed significance as health hazards due to lack of sanitation is a major reason for the school dropouts in JJ clusters and unorganized colonies”
Neeraj jain, CEO, Water Aid said, “This campaign will play a major catalyst in creating Delhi as city that we dream of-a city which can claim total sanitation and free of health hazards. This move will make an impact on the quality of life of the people and schools children living in slum areas and the schools in these areas.
The Swacch Delhi and Swaasth Delhi campaign will reach out to the people living in areas in Delhi under the SDMC where SARD has a demonstrable presence with its activities providing it a platform to work amicably with the local governance and other civil society organizations. The presence of SARD is also strengthened by its ongoing intervention in almost 150 schools of south MCD on the component of personal hygiene and sanitation condition and attitude of the children in the schools.
The Van/ Canter decorated with the WASH messages that will travel through 30 colonies that have 200 schools in the South, Central, West and Najafgarh zones of Delhi. The campaign will cover three to four colonies in a day. The Van will include a live performance by the music band displaying and disseminating the messages on improved health and sanitation. The highlight of the campaign is engagement of the community through street play (nukkad natak ) and participation of children in different activities through games and quiz and beautiful give- aways to distributed among the children.
The Van was inaugurated by Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak Director Education SDMC.
SARD is going to sensitize the children and community people towards their health and hygiene making them aware of the use of safe water and basic sanitation facilities in the schools. SARD has proposed a WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Delhi Drive to promote and sensitize the children, school authorities and community stakeholders on the importance of WASH Components in close coordination with Water Aid.
