Veteran actor Reema Lagoo passes away
MUMBAI:On the morning of May 18, the film industry woke up to the news of the sad demise of the veteran actor in Mumbai. She was 59 and passed away after a cardiac arrest at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
Till last night, Reema was shooting for her television show Naamkarann and complained of chest pain after she reached home. She was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, could not make it. She is survived by daughter Mrunmayee.
She was perfectly fine and had no health issues…So it is really shocking for all us that she is no more with us.”Her last rites will be held later today. Says Reema Lagoo’s son-in-law Reema Lagoo was a veteran of the Marathi stage and appeared in several high profile Bollywood films, working with top stars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Reema Lagoo is survived by her daughter Mrunmayee, also an actress. Messages of condolence have been tweeted by actors Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra.
Reema Lagoo was born Nayan Khadbade in 1958. She was the daughter of a well-known Marathi actress and began acting herself after finishing school in Pune. She took the name Reema Lagoo after her marriage – she and her husband later separated but Ms Lagoo retained the name.
Reema Lagoo’s best-known roles were as mother to the stars – she played Salman’s mother in Maine Pyar Kiya, Saajan and Hum Saath Saath Hain, Akshay’s mother in Jai Kishen, Kajol’s in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Shah Rukh Khan’s in Kal Ho Na Ho, and Madhuri Dixit’s in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. She played Sanjay Dutt’s mother in Vaastav, in which her character kills her gangster son. Ms Lagoo won four Filmfare awards for Best Supporting Actress.
Reema Lagoo was also known for starring in the TV serials Tu Tu Main Main and Shriman Shrimati. Her last screen appearances were in the Marathi film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali and TV show Naamkaran. Lagoo, who had begun her career soon after completing high school, essayed memorable roles in films and TV. Her mother Mandakini Bhadbhade was also an actor and a well known name in the Marathi theatre.
Reema, who was married to actor Vivek Lagoo, began her acting career in the late 1970s.She has essayed the role of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s on screen mother in a number of films and was equally popular for her performances in TV shows.
Her character in TV show ‘Tu Tu Main Main’ is very well etched in the minds of viewers. Lagoo has been an integral part of films such as ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Aashiqui’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’, ‘Vaastav’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’, to name a few. Her last rights will reportedly be performed at 2 PM at the Oshiwara cremation ground here. She is survived by daughter Mrunmayee Lagoo and son-in-law Vinay Waikul.
