Speaker convenes all-party meet on Thursday

images [1]NEW DELHI: Lok Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has convened an all-party meeting on Thursday to see whether the functioning of the Lower House can be improved: thus far, there as been virtually no business conducted in Parliament.
The meeting’s intention is not to “break the deadlock” between the government and the Opposition in the House as it is the duty of the government and not that of the presiding officer, sources in Parliament indicated.
The meeting comes in the wake of Congress members holding up placards in the house, climaxing on Monday with party MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury climbing the podium of the Speaker’s dais and banging a placard on it.
An upset Speaker had asked him to leave the House and named him in a statement for “disregarding the authority of the chair”. Earlier, on the second day of the Session, Ms Mahajan had warned the Opposition that she might be compelled to take disciplinary action against MPs who were disrupting the House over the Lalit Modi controversy.
Congress MPs have meanwhile objected to the alleged blackout of the opposition protests by Lok Sabha Television. They have also complained that Lok Sabha TV broadcasts only focus the Speaker, blacking out protests by opposition members.
The House will meet on Thursday after a two day break following the demise of former president A P J Abdul Kalam,
