Sharad Pawar set to contest BCCI elections, sources
NEW DELHI : President of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar, has decided to contest the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) elections, according to the sources.
The BCCI elections had already been postponed twice due to the IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal hearing in the Supreme Court. However, on January 22, the Supreme Court had ordered that BCCI elections should be held within the next six weeks.
The SC had also stated that sidelined BCCI president N Srinivasan could not contest elections as long as he was involved in a “conflict of interest” situation as an owner of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Earlier, Pawar held the BCCI president’s post from 2005 to 2008.In fact, he took the reins of International Cricket Council (ICC) from 2010 to 2012 as well.
As Srini has landed on a sticky wicket, Pawar could emerge as a strong candidate. This time around it’s East Zone’s turn to nominate the BCCI president. But to seal the deal Pawar should secure majority of votes from East Zone units.Earlier Pawar had declined to contest the elections.
