Second phase witnesses heavy turnout, but isn’t without share of disquiet
KOLKATA: The second phase election in West Bengal began quietly and at the end of the day, State’s Chief Electoral Officer’s (CeO)Office announced a heavy turnout of voters – above 82 percent – in all six Lok Sabha seats, but everything wasn’t without its share of disquiet.
As for example, with heavy turnout of voters, as the day grew old the news of disquiet also began to pour in almost all six constituencies – Malda North, Malda South, Murshidabad, Jangipur, Raiganj and Balurghat. And as CeO office feed back in most cases – from booth jamming to threats and breaking of election code – pointed to the Trinamool Congress men allegedly engineering them.
Incidentally, the second phase happens to be tough test for the Congress as most of the constituencies were believed to be their strong holds.“The party will be awaiting the effects of low key campaign investment by their central leaders and how much they retained from the BJP wave and TMC,’’ said a political commentator.
Interestingly, while the state Congress leaders fear effects of inflations – a real threat – and BJP cutting into their votes, an aggressive TMC isn’t an insignificant factor these six LS constituencies either.
But as feared by the TMC camp, both the Congress and CPI(M) gave out their reactions on Saradha Chit Fund scam which has hit the TMC Government, like, it hit a government in Delhi still after Harshad Mehta was sent to jail decades ago for one of the biggest financial scams in India. While the Congress again alleged TMC ministers are involved in Saradha scam, CPI(M) blamed Congress-led `corrupt UPA II for not having done much’ despite being reminded about it.
The allegations getting wide coverage in Prasar Bharati news reports is `suspected to be a part of a well-nit plot’ by Congress and CPI(M) on the day of poll, said TMC insiders.
