PM Narendra Modi holds bilateral talks with Chinese President & South African President
PANAJI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds today separate bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and President of South Africa Jacob Zuma on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Goa. Terrorism was the key topic during both the bilateral meetings.
Briefing media in Goa, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said both India and China recognised terrorism as a key issue.The Prime Minister told the Chinese President that both countries have been victims of terrorism which is a scourge afflicting the entire nation.
Mr Jinping stressed that India and China must step up their counter terrorism mechanism. Replying to a question on Masood Azhar, Mr Swarup said there is close coordination between India and China on the issue, and that particular dialogue will continue.
He said the Chinese side is very well aware of India’s concerns, and there is a need to ensure that globally notified terrorists are designated by the UN.The two leaders expressed satisfaction on the high level exchanges which took place recently.
Prime Minister Modi also raised the issue of India’s Nuclear Security Group membership.Mr Swarup said one round of consultations had already taken place between two sides over the issue, and President Xi said that second round would be happening soon.
Mr Jinping assured that China is working on issue of trade imbalance and asked Chinese companies to invest in India.
During his meeting with the South African President, Mr Modi thanked him for showing solidarity on Uri attacks.
Mr Jacob Zuma said terrorism is a global phenomenon which needs global action.Mr Zuma also supported India’s NSG bid. Mr Modi said current volume of trade and investment between the two countries is very low and needs to be increased in areas like mining and hydrocarbon.
