PCI chief Rajesh Tomar suspended over para athletes’ mistreatment
NEW DELHI: A marred sporting event in India was once again highlighted to showcase the negligence by the authorities over athletes of the nation. The recent National Para-Athletics championship sparked a row after which the body decided to suspended president Rajesh Tomar.
The decision to suspend Tomar was taken at the meeting of the executive committee in Bengaluru. The Paralympic commitee has decided to appoint the vice-president as the present acting president. In an interview to a leading english news channel, Tomar stated that an internal enquiry has been set up to look at the matter.
He also added that there had been negligence in part of the officials and it will be handed severely. Though he didn’t want to put the blame game on any one.The entire scenario highlights how lack of proper facilities and funds can hurt athletes badly.
The hostel of para athletes lacked basic facilities – including drinking water and food. Reports have come in that the players were treated like animals. The participants were forced to use filthy toilets and bathrooms. The dormitories had no beds. The under-construction building at a village in Ghaziabad where rooms were allotted to various national teams had no furniture at all.
The National Para Athletics Championship that was held in 2015, was a shame given the way how everything including the venue was presented in a disdainful manner.
