Om Birla elected Lok Sabha Speaker with voice vote
NEW DELHI : BJP leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has been elected Speaker for the second consecutive time today i.e. Wednesday.
Prime Minister Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took Om Birla to his seat. With this, Birla joined the list of leaders Balram Jakhar, GM Balayogi and PA Sangma who became Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed Om Birla’s name in the House, the members of the House present there elected him as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha by voice vote. After this, Prime Minister Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took Om Birla to his seat.
BJP leader Om Birla joined the list of leaders Balram Jakhar, GM Balayogi and PA Sangma who became Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time. If Om Birla completes his second term, he will be the second leader to do so after Balram Jakhar. Many leaders became Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time, but could not complete the full 5-year term. Only Balram Jakhar completed both his terms from 1980 to 1985 and 1985 to 1989.
In the Lok Sabha elections 2024, Om Birla has been elected MP from the parliamentary seat of Kota. Born on 4 December 1962 in Kota city of Rajasthan, Om Birla is known for working out of the box. He completed his schooling from Gumanpura Government Higher Secondary School in Kota and then completed B.Com and M.Com from Rajasthan University. Birla is married to Amita and has two daughters Anjali and Akanksha. Wife Amita is a government doctor by profession. When he came to Sangh and politics from student politics, he has been elected MLA three times and MP for the third time. Along with this, he also made many records in his name. He is the first MP from Rajasthan to become the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shook hands in Parliament today and together welcomed the newly elected Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Rahul Gandhi is the third member of the Gandhi family to hold the post of Leader of the Opposition. Mr Gandhi has followed in the footsteps of his mother Sonia Gandhi, who was the Leader of the Opposition from 1999 to 2004, and his father Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Leader of the Opposition from 1989 to 1990, to this constitutional post of parliamentary democracy.
Pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared the election results after the Opposition, which has nominated Congress MP K Suresh as its candidate, did not insist on voting on the motion. After the announcement, Prime Minister Modi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rushed to Mr Birla’s seat in the front row of the Treasury benches to escort him to the Speaker’s Chair. He was accompanied by Rahul Gandhi.
Congratulating Mr Birla, Prime Minister Modi said, “It is an honour for us that you have been elected to this Chair for the second time.” “I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for the next five years. Your sweet smile makes the entire House happy.” “I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire Opposition and the All India Alliance,” Rahul Gandhi said. “You are the ultimate arbiter of the voice of the people. The government may have political power, but the Opposition also represents the voice of the people. The Opposition would like to assist you in your work, I am confident that you will allow us to speak in the House.” The history of the Leader of Opposition in India dates back to 1969 when Ram Suhag Singh first held the position. Since then, the role has become a cornerstone of parliamentary democracy.
The Leader of Opposition plays a key role in the appointment of key officials such as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Lokayukta.
