NCW issues notice to Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on Nirmala Sitharaman
NEW DELHI : National Commission for Women has issued notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi over his statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked a woman to defend him on Rafale deal debate in Parliament.
NCW said the remarks on Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s reply to a debate in Parliament were extremely misogynistic, offensive, unethical and shows disrespect towards dignity and honour of women in general. The Commission said it strongly condemns such irresponsible and disparaging views of persons holding responsible positions.
In a remark, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a woman to defend him in Parliament on the matter of Rafale deal. He was referring to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech on the Rafale deal in Lok Sabha last week.
His comments have not only provoked a sharp response from PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah but also invited a notice from the National Commission for Women. The NCW would serve notice to Gandhi tomorrow over his comments on Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
While addressing a rally at Jaipur in Rajasthan, Gandhi said the PM, who “claims to have a broad chest”, had “run away” from a debate in Parliament on the matter.“The watchman with a 56-inch chest ran away and told a woman, Sitharaman ji, defend me. I won’t be able to defend myself, defend me,” he said.
“For two and a half hours, the woman could not defend him. I had asked a straight question answer ‘yes or no’, but she couldn’t answer,” said Gandhi. Responding to Gandhi, Modi, while addressing a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, said the opposition is insulting a woman. “This is an insult to the women in the country,” he added.
