Kumble, other issues behind Guha’s resignation from BCCI panel?
MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) administrators were not willing to hazard a guess on why renowned cricket historian Ramachandra Guha resigned as a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).
Mr. Guha, who told the Supreme Court that he tendered his resignation to CoA chairman Vinod Rai on May 28, said he had communicated to the other CoA members — Diana Edulji and Vikram Limaye — that he would soon explain the reason behind his decision.
Mr. Guha, a keen follower of the game, could have possibly been upset at the news of the senior players questioning the “style of functioning” of head coach Anil Kumble, and captain Virat Kohli conveying the same to the CoA chairman on May 21. Mr. Rai is learnt to have discussed the matter with his colleagues at a meeting in Hyderabad.
Sources revealed that there were some unpleasant moments when Mr. Rai raised the matter of the BCCI having asked Virender Sehwag to apply for the head coach’s job through its acting-secretary Amitabh Choudhary. The CoA was possibly livid at Sehwag being asked to apply for the job.
It can be also be presumed that the CoA — unfairly criticised for not being able to implement the Lodha recommendations — has not been comfortable with the Supreme Court not responding to the handful of status reports it has submitted since its appointment on January 30. All these could have contributed to Mr. Guha’s resignation.
