NEW DELHI : The wives of jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his former Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren met in Delhi today. There is speculation in political circles whether former Income Tax Commissioner Sunita Kejriwal may take over the top post.
Kalpana Soren and Sunita Kejriwal hugged and congratulated each other on camera. His meeting was seen as a show of strength against the misuse of investigative agencies by the Center to weaken the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) opposition just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
These women said – despite the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal ji and Hemant Soren ji, they are standing strongly with the people of their respective states and are fighting. Showing her support towards Sunita Kejriwal and her family, Kalpana Soren, while referring to her husband’s arrest, said that the same incident which happened in Jharkhand has also happened in Delhi.
After reaching Delhi, Kalpana Soren told reporters – After arresting my husband Hemant Soren ji, Arvind Kejriwal ji has been arrested. Entire Jharkhand stands with Sunita Kejriwal ji. We have shared each other’s pain. At the same time, we have decided that we will take this fight forward together,” the same incident that happened in Jharkhand two months ago has happened in Delhi.
After arresting my husband Hemant Soren ji, Arvind Kejriwal ji has been arrested. The whole of Jharkhand is with Kejriwal ji. We share each other’s sorrow. Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged money laundering in the formulation of the Delhi liquor policy case, while Hemant Soren was detained for his alleged involvement in the Rs 600 crore land scam. Long-time JMM leader Champai Soren took over as chief minister after Hemant Soren’s arrest by the ED.
Earlier this week, Sunita Kejriwal launched the “Kejriwal Ko Ashirwad” campaign in video announcements on behalf of Arvind Kejriwal and asked people to share the message on the WhatsApp number given by her.
Meanwhile, the video drew a reaction from the ruling BJP, with Union Minister Hardeep Puri saying Sunita Kejriwal is “preparing herself for the role of Chief Minister”.
Sunita Kejriwal is a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who served in the Income Tax Department for 22 years. She  met Arvind Kejriwal during a training program in Bhopal. She belongs to the 1994 batch, while Arvind Kejriwal is a 1995 batch officer. They took voluntary retirement in 2016. Her last posting was at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in Delhi where he served as Commissioner of Income Tax.
Kalpana Soren Soren says “The incident that took place in Jharkhand 2 months back, the same is now going on in Delhi. CM Arvind Kejriwal has also been sent to jail just like my husband Hemant Soren… I met Sunita Kejriwal ji and we decided that we would fight against this.
I am going to meet Sonia Gandhi as well today and discuss the situation in Jharkhand. I will also attend the INDIA alliance rally in Ramlila Maidan tomorrow…”Terming the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as a rerun of what happened to former Jharkhand chief minister and JMM leader, Hemant Soren, his wife Kalpana Soren on said she has made common cause with the former’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, and will join her fight against the arrest. JMM leader Hemant Soren was arrested by the ED in February over his alleged connection with a land scam case. Last week, a special PMLA court extended his judicial custody till April 4. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest followed almost a similar pattern after he skipped ED summons repeatedly since last November.
