KOLKATA : Justice of Calcutta High Court Abhijit Gangopadhyay made it clear that he will be a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Told in Kolkata on Tuesday that it is possible that he will join BJP in a program on the afternoon of March 7, 2024.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had resigned from the post earlier in the day. Justice Gangopadhyay reached the chamber in the High Court on Tuesday morning, after which a resignation letter was sent on his behalf. Sources said Justice Gangopadhyay sent his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu and also sent copies of it to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam.
By the way, 1 day ago (March 4, 2024), Justice Gangopadhyay had told that he has completed his work as a judge, because some lawyers and litigants had urged him to reconsider the decision of resigning from the post of judge. There is talk of Justice Gangopadhyay contesting from Tamluk Lok Sabha seat from BJP. Gangopadhyay was appointed as a judge in Kolkata High Court in 2018. He studied law from Hazra College. He has also been a state service officer before joining judiciary.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay confirmed his resignation, saying he would likely join the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday afternoon. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, he also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called the prime minister a “very hard-working person”. Attacked the ruling Trinamool. The former judge said the Prime Minister had “inspired” him to enter politics.
He made the announcement while taking a dig at other opposition parties, saying, “Trinamool is breaking… it means corruption. PM Modi is a very hard-working person and he is trying to do something for this country.” CPIM does not and Congress is a family landlord.” Justice Gangopadhyay came into limelight last year after an interview. In which he discussed the case he was hearing – it is widely expected that the BJP will field him in the general elections.
There is speculation that he may contest from Tamluk seat, which has been a stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress in recent elections. The party has held it since the 2009 elections. The seat was held by Suvendu Adhikari (between 2009 and 2016, when he left). Before joining the BJP, Suvendu was seen as the right-hand man of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier today, Justice Gangopadhyay, told reporters, “I am going to meet the Chief Justice for a courtesy call. I have already sent my resignation to the President.” Justice Gangopadhyay, who announced his decision to step down on Sunday, had received an invitation to join politics from Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, to which he replied, “As a political spokesperson he has said a lot of things against me , but I like him ” He is a good person”.
Apart from interviews about the case he was hearing – in respect of which Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had said that “Judges have no authority to give interviews on pending cases” – Justice Gangopadhyay often spoke about various issues. But he has been in the headlines with his decisions.
Earlier this year, he joined Justice Soumen Sen – who led the bench that had stayed the order for a CBI probe into the college irregularities. Justice Gangopadhyay’s order to arrest a lawyer in the courtroom on contempt charges in December last year had sparked a major controversy. The Bar Association had announced to boycott all proceedings related to the judge. Then he was hearing a case related to the Madrasa Service Commission of the state.
