NEW DELHI : Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is facing all-round opposition after the murder of a medical student in West Bengal, faced another setback and protest on Sunday . One of its MPs Jawahar Sarkar resigned from the Rajya Sabha accusing Mamata Banerjee of incompetence.
Mamata Banerjee has not yet commented on Sarkar’s resignation.TMC leader Jawahar Sarkar on Sunday resigned from the Rajya Sabha and active politics. He expressed his protest against the way the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government handled the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case.
In a letter addressed to the Trinamool Congress Chief, Sarkar expressed his concern over the ruling TMC government’s “lack of decisive action” against corruption. He said, I will soon go to Delhi to submit my resignation to the Rajya Sabha Chairman. He said the culprits of the Kolkata rape murder case should be given severe punishment.
Sarkar’s letter to Mamata Banerjee read, “I wish to inform you that I have decided to resign from Parliament and politics as well.” In his letter, Sarkar highlighted that after publicly urging the TMC to address the corruption scandals plaguing the party, he faced resistance from senior leaders. “I have never seen such anger and total distrust against the government,” he said, referring to the ongoing public outrage over the RG Kar case. Sarkar served as IAS office in West Bengal cadre.
Jawahar’s decision comes days after the Trinamool Congress leadership sent him a stern message over his remarks about corruption in the party. It asked him to “respectfully step down if he feels he is not compatible with the party.” Seeking justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Hospital and College, Sarkar in his letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “The current sudden outburst of anger of the people is against the uncontrolled domineering attitude of certain people and corrupt people. In my entire tenure, I have never seen such anger and complete distrust against the government, even if it says something correct or factual.”
“I have been suffering patiently for a month since the horrific incident at RG Kar Hospital and was expecting your direct intervention in the old style of Mamata Banerjee with the agitating junior doctors. This has not happened and whatever punitive action the government is taking now is too little and too late.”Explaining the reason behind his resignation, Jawahar Sarkar said, “Ever since the rape of the junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, I was hoping that you (CM Mamata Banerjee) like the old style CM Mamata Banerjee, would stand with the junior doctor protesting after the Kolkata rape case and intervene in the matter, but this has not happened.
In a letter to Mamata Banerjee, Jawahar Sarkar expressed his displeasure with the Mamata government and said, I think the situation in the state would have become normal long ago if the government had taken action against the corrupt doctors immediately after the rape of the junior doctor and the culprits were punished as soon as possible.
The bureaucrat tuned politician Jawahar Sarkar has not only resigned from the TMC party, but he has also announced that now he is also withdrawing from politics. Sarkar has also revealed that he had already made up his mind to submit his resignation to the party once before today (2024). Sarkar said that in the year 2022, when the party’s education minister was accused of corruption and the evidence against him was being clearly shown in the news.
He said even then I had issued a statement saying that the party should take steps to deal with corruption. But, I was surrounded by senior party leaders. I did not resign then because I hoped that you (CM Mamata Banerjee) would continue your public campaign against ‘cut money’ and corruption, which you started a year ago. He said, but I remained in the party to work for the country.
TMC party leader Kunal Ghosh said on the resignation of Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar, at present we are working like soldiers under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, but this does not mean that I criticize the personal principle of Jawahar Sarkar, it is not so, it is his decision.
Sarkar wrote in the letter. “I feel normalcy could have been restored in this state long back, if the corrupt doctors’ caucus was broken and those guilty of taking improper administrative action were punished immediately after the reprehensible incident. He urged the chief minister to take stern action in connection with the rape and murder case and added, “Please do something to save the state.
