Is Sunny Deol BJP’s candidate from Amritsar?

NEW DELHI/ PUNE : Bollywood star Sunny Deol is likely to contest from Amritsar on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ticket (BJP) in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, according to reports. Reports are rife that the ‘Ghayal’ star may join the party amid speculations after BJP president Amit Shah’s meeting with Deol at Pune Airport on Friday evening. The meeting lasted for five minutes at the airport lounge.
According to NDTV, the meeting came as the BJP is yet to announce candidates for three seats in Punjab for the elections. “I heard about it (rumours about joining politics). I just met him (Amit Shah) and we took a photograph, that’s it,” Sunny Deol told NDTV.
The New Indian Express had earlier reported that for the neighbouring Gurdaspur seat, the names of actor Akshay Khanna and his mother Kavita Khanna, both the kin of late actor and former MP Vinod Khanna, are in the reckoning.cheena-28-1484230437-156054-khaskhabar

The BJP had also contemplated the names of actor Poonam Dhillon and Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina. Poonam Dhillon was appointed as the vice president of the BJP’s Mumbai unit last year.
Deol, son of veteran actor Dharmendra, is a step son of Hema Malini who is a BJP MP from the Mathur. The BJP has formed an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab and is contesting on of the 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab: Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Hoshiarpur. Punjab will to go to polls on May 19. The results of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections will be announced on May 23.

Mr Shah met the actor to convince him to contest from Amritsar, sources said. No announcement has been made so far.

Sunny Deol, 62, is best known for his action hero roles in films like “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha“, “Himmat“, “Ghatak” and “Border“. Gurdaspur seat is likely to go to actor and former lawmaker’s Vinod Khanna’s wife Kavita Khanna or his son, actor Akshaye Khanna.
Sunny Deol’s father, veteran actor Dharmendra had a brief stint in politics about ten years ago, when he contested the 2004 national election from Rajasthan’s Bikaner on BJP ticket and won. Last week, the veteran actor campaigned for his wife, actor and BJP lawmaker Hema Malini, in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.
