Govt extends use of Rs 500, 1000 notes for paying public utility bills by another 72 hrs
NEW DELHI : Government today extended use of old 500 and 1,000 rupees notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees as well as purchases from co-operative stores by another 72 hours to 14th of November.
Earlier the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, airline ticketing, petrol pumps and others till midnight tonight.
Finance Ministry in a statement said, the decision has been taken considering various representations received from different quarters in the matter.It said,the ID proof of customers will be required for transactions in consumer cooperative stores.
Besides, Court fee will also be allowed to be paid in old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.Old notes of such denomination will be accepted for payment of fees, charges, taxes, penalty to central and state governments, including municipalities and local bodies. Such old notes will also be accepted for payment of utility charges like water and electricity.
Meanwhile, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that to ensure smooth traffic movement across all National Highways, the toll suspension has been extended till 14th November midnight.
