Covid-19 cases takes India’s tally past 4.11 million

covid-06NEW DELHI : With 90,633 new cases, the infections in India crossed the 41 lakh mark. Of the 41,13,812 cases, 8,62,320 are active infections, while 31,80,866 patients have already been discharged.
As many as 1065 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, taking the casualties in the country to 70,626, also the highest single day-spike in the world, pushing the country’s tally past 4.11 million, the Union health ministry data showed on Sunday.
India has overtaken Brazil to now become the country with the second-largest number of people infected with novel corona virus. Brazil, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organisation, has 40.41 lakh infected people.

Only the United States, where more than 60 lakh people have so far been infected, is ahead of India now. This is the first time that India has reported over 90,000 new cases.
As many as 70,626 people have died of the coronavirus disease so far with 1,065 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, according to the latest figures released by the health ministry.

As most cases continue to come from Maharashtra (636,574), Andhra Pradesh (382,104) and Karnataka (283,298), the Centre has asked these states to focus on breaking the chain of transmission and keeping the mortality below 1%.

Maharashtra contributes the maximum to the active caseload amounting to almost 25%, followed by Andhra Pradesh (12.06%), Karnataka (11.71%), Uttar Pradesh (6.92%) and Tamil Nadu which stands at 6.10%, according to the health ministry’s statement on Saturday.
Of these, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka account for nearly 49% of the active cases and more than 57% of Covid-19 deaths, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported the fastest growth is coronavirus infection in August, registering over 3.70 lakh cases, a senior state health official said.
According to data of the Maharashtra health department, the state reported 3,76,587 COVID-19 cases last month, 2,41,820 cases in July and 1,04,748 cases in June. “On August 1, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state was 4,31,719, which jumped to 8,08,306 on September 1. This is probably the fastest growth of cases in the state since January,” the health official said.
Maharashtra’s Covid-19 cases jumped to a new high of 19,218 on Friday, taking its tally to 863,062. The state reported 378 deaths on Friday and with this the state’s death toll now stands at 25,964. The recovery rate in the state is 72.51 per cent. Currently, there are 2,10,978 active cases present in the state.

According to Union Health Ministry More than 1.43 lakh people have recovered from the corona virus over the past two 24-hour periods,with the data showing 70,072 discharges in the 24 hours leading up to September 5 and a record 73,642 discharges from hospitals or isolation facilities since then.

The  national recovery rate of around 77.3 per cent, which compares favourably with the global average of 66.7 per cent.
India’s case fatality rate, however, is lower than the global average and steadily declining. It stands at around 1.73 per cent compared to 3.27 globally.
