Congress and India have started thinking differently: MP Manish Tewari

NEW DELHI: Congress MP and G-23 Member Manish Tewari on Saturday opined that Congress’ dismal run in recent elections is probably down to the factor that India and Congress have started “thinking differently”. He also hit out at the party leadership for failing to do self-introspection and letting an exodus of senior leaders happen under its nose.
While speaking to media, Tewari said, “Two years back, 23 of us wrote to Sonia Gandhi that the party’s situation is worrying and should be taken seriously. Congress lost all Assembly polls after that letter. If Congress and India thought alike, it seems either of them has started thinking differently.”
Reacting to the recent resignation of senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congress MP said, “A crack seems to have appeared in coordination between India and Congress that existed since 1885. A self-introspection was needed.” “I feel that had the consensus of the meeting at Sonia Gandhi’s residence on December 20, 2020, been executed, this situation wouldn’t have arrived,” he added.

Yesterday, Ghulam Nabi Azad in a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi resigned from all positions of the Congress party including the primary membership of the party.”The Indian National Congress has lost both the will and the ability under the tutelage of the coterie that runs the AICC to fight for what is right for India,” wrote Azad in his resignation letter. This latest high-profile exit from the Congress party came after the polls for the Congress President were deferred.

Azad’s resignation follows a series of exits of senior leaders from the party, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jaiveer Shergil, Jitin Prasada, Kapil Sibal,  RPN Singh ,amongst others.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi would be pursued to return as Congress President as there is no one else in the party other than him who has a pan-India appeal, veteran leader M Mallikarjun Kharge has said in Bangaluru.. The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said “He should be well-recognised, accepted man to the entire Congress party”, Mr Kharge told News Agency PTI on Friday. “So, no body is there (in the party with such a stature).”

He recalled that all senior leaders had “forced” Sonia Gandhi to join and work for the party, and had requested Rahul Gandhi to “come and fight”.
Mr Kharge said we will force him and request him (to return as Congress President). We stand behind him. We will try to pursue him”, the former Union Minister said.
