Calcutta High Court directs CID to probe Tapas’ speech, asks police to file FIR

tapasKOLKATA: Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal’s public threats to Left women workers with `rape’ and threatening men workers with `shooting them with his (Pal’s) revolver.’ The bench also asked police to file FIR on the basis of complaint lodged by a local resident Biplab Chowdhury who in his complaint in a local Police Station said he felt threatened on Pal’s provocative speech. Incidentally, Tapas Pal after the ritual of usual submission of his apology to party, neither TMC nor party leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expelled him and virtually left him untouched with mere mild censures. Nor State Government initiated any action against Pal! However, Calcutta High Court’s direction both to CID and police to file an FIR would only deepen the embarrassment more apparently for Mamata Banerjee who couldn’t take a tough stand on the issue. Calcutta High Court’s intervention would also raise the question on Government’s faith in maintaining law and order in the State.
