NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday categorically rejected a news report saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi.
BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member MJ Akbar slammed the daily for publishing news and said the party will take legal action against the media house.
BJP’s reaction comes after a daily reported PM Modi had a meeting with Owaisi ahead of the announcement of dates for the Assembly elections in Bihar by the Election Commission.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Akbar termed the news report an example of ‘yellow journalism’, further adding that his party will sue the daily seeking ‘heavy’ damages.
“This is an absolute fabrication and a case of yellow journalism. It is proof that the opposition is conspiring against us by using lies. It is sad that there are some elements of the media that are involved in this and this is the example of yellow journalism at its worst,” Akbar told the media here.
“We will file a defamation case and seek heavy damages against the yellow newspaper. Our legal team is examining our options,” Akbar added.Earlier in the day, the Janata Dal (United) demanded to know the agenda of the meeting between PM Modi and Owaisi recently.
“I want Prime Minister Modi and MIM chief Owaisi to tell the nation about the secret of their meeting. Was the meeting focused at defeating the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in Bihar or was it focused to uplift the minorities in the state?” JD (U) leader KC Tyagi was quoted as saying by ANI.
The AIMIM chief earlier announced that his party would contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, saying his party would contest the polls in the Seemanchal region in Bihar.
The 243-member Bihar Assembly comes to an end on November 29. The polls in the state will begin on October 12 and end on November 5.
