BJP fields Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi Constituency
NEW DELHI : Defying dynasty politics, Bharatiya Janata Party has released its first list of candidates in which former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri Swaraj will contest from New Delhi Lok Sabha seat.
The ticket of current Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, who won elections twice from this seat, has been dropped. Soon after the announcement of her name, Ms Swaraj said she would try to carry on the legacy established by her mother, who she was sure would be blessed by heaven.
Ms Swaraj said, “I know I have the blessings of mother (Sushma Swaraj). But this achievement is not of Bansuri Swaraj but of every worker of Delhi BJP.” Bansuri Swaraj, an eminent lawyer, brings rich experience in legal processes to the political arena. Last year, the BJP appointed him co-convenor of the legal cell of BJP Delhi. Bansuri Swaraj has over fifteen years of experience in the legal profession.
After completing her graduation in English Literature from the University of Warwick, she pursued a law degree at the prestigious BPP Law (in London). His educational journey includes qualifying as a Barrister at Law and being called to the Bar by the London. Further enhancing his legal credentials, he completed a Master of Studies at St Catharine’s College, Oxford University.
Over the course of his professional career, Bansuri has carved a niche for himself in the legal field, representing high-profile litigants in contentious litigation at various judicial fora. Bansuri Swaraj made headlines last year when she launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
Hoping to make a huge lead as it works towards its target of winning 370 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP today announced its list of 195 candidates even before the notification of the election dates. The party’s strongest contenders in the list include PM Narendra Modi, who will contest from Varanasi for the third time, and Home Minister Amit Shah, who will be fielded again from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar.
On Saturday, it announced its first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. Many names were surprising in this list of 195 candidates from 16 states and 2 union territories.
The name of Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, is also included in these. The party has fielded Delhi BJP Secretary Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi. BJP has announced the names of total 5 candidates in Delhi. Of these, while Bansuri Swaraj has been given ticket from New Delhi, Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk, Manoj Tiwari from North-East Delhi, Kamaljit Sehrawat from West Delhi and Ramveer Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi have been fielded.
In such a situation, former Union Ministers Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Pravesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri have not been given tickets from their current Lok Sabha seats. Out of the remaining two seats, East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir’s ticket is also certain to be cut.
In the 2019 elections, BJP had won all seven Lok Sabha seats of Delhi. However, this time the party will face a tough challenge because Congress and Aam Aadmi Party have formed an alliance for the Lok Sabha elections. According to the agreement between the two parties, Aam Aadmi Party will contest elections on 4 seats in Delhi, while Congress will field its candidates on 3 seats. In the last elections, Congress candidates stood at number 2 on 5 out of 7 seats and Aam Aadmi Party on 2 seats
