Bengal BJP decides to use its four MPs to reach grass-root
KOLKATA: In a politically not-happening State, without any powerful issues to focus on, BJP in Bengal decides to reach out to rural areas in a more determined mode using its four MPs.
According to party sources, it also happens to be central party directive that MPs must be given charge of developments in two districts each in rural areas, so that their reaching out to these zones help both districts and building party roots.
Sources said next week in a party meeting leaders would decide which districts would go to whom. Incidentally, four MPs are Babul Supriyo, also a Central Minister, Surinder Singh Aluwhalia two MPs after last general elections, and George Baker and Rupa Ganguly, Rajya Sabha Members, will look after two districts each and would look into their well being.
They would have to also look after the status of BJP Government’s schemes and if they are implemented in full-hearted manner, if they are not then they have to detect them,’’ said a state party leader.
Interestingly, political observers feel this would be a very tactical way to confront the Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress “which recently retreated from its drive against demonetization by Modi Government, though we do not exactly know why she should have retreated. It all seemed to sudden,’’ admitted a top state BJP leader.
May be Mamata Banerjee was not getting enough backing from other leaders in Delhi could be a reason,’’ he said, adding, “but we have failed to pick up the issue of hospitals and doctors for profiteering at the cost of patients, like she did last week leaving opposition parties defenceless.’’
Whatever would be the party reasons, but political observers feel that in rural areas political confrontation would become inevitable if BJP really means business,’’ a columnist said. Let’s wait till next week when actually the responsibility is given and how TMC, Congress and Left reacts,’’ a party leader said.
As it would happen, BJP move may create a bigger political confrontation if districts are given which have six parliamentary constituencies and more assembly constituencies. But can you barter development for political pressure, quipped a BJP leader.
