EC announces five-phase polls in J&K, Jharkhand; counting on Dec 23
NEW DELHI : The Election Commission announced the schedule for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand today.Elections in the two states will be held in five phases: on November 25, December 2, December 9, December 14 and December 20.
Counting for both states is going to be held on December 23. The Model code of conduct will come into effect immediately.In Jharkhand, the total number of seats are 81. 9 are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, 28 for Scheduled Tribe candidates. 99.06 per cent voters have voter identity cards. There are 24, 648 polling stations.
In Jammu and Kashmir, There are 87 seats; 7 are reserved for Scehduled Castes. There are 10,015 polling stations.Both states are sensitive from the point of view of security and law and order, said the Election Commission.
“We have identified the security requirements after discussing the issue with the authorities concerned,” said Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath.
While the term of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly ends on January 19, the term of Jharkhand assembly expires on January 3.
- Counting will be held in both states as well as for Delhi bypolls on Dec 23.
- Both Jharkhand and J&K will go to polls in five phases – Nov 25 (Phase 1); Dec 2 (Phase 2); Dec 9 (Phase 3); Dec 14 (Phase 4); Dec 20 (Phase 5)
- Bypolls due in three Delhi Assembly constituencies – Mehrauli, Tughlakabad, Krishna Nagar; to be held on Nov 25 along with Phase 1 polling in both states.

- Paper voter slip will be provided in both states
- NOTA option will be made available in both states
- 10,015 polling stations in J&K; 24,648 in Jharkhand
- EPIC coverage in Jharkhand 99.06%; in J&K 91%.
- Total number of electorate in J&K – 72.25 lakhs; in Jharkhand – 207.44 lakhs.
