“Pyasa” Actress Waheeda Rehman gets emotional as she receives highest film honor
NEW DELHI : Screen icon Waheeda Rehman on Tuesday became the eighth woman artiste to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest recognition in the field of Indian cinema. 85-year-old actress Waheeda Rehman has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award by President Droupadi Murmu at an award ceremony in Delhi. The “Pyaasa” actor had tears in his eyes as he was handed India’s highest film honor.
The actress, who was visibly emotional, received the award while wearing a beautiful cream saree and looked her elegant best. Besides Waheeda Rehman, film industry’s Alia Bhatt, Kriti Sanon and Allu Arjun also received prizes in the Best Actress and Actor category. Alia Bhatt, Kriti Sanon and Allu Arjun were dressed in shades of cream as they received their awards. Alia, who was accompanied by husband Ranbir Kapoor, was seen receiving her award while wearing her stunning wedding saree.
On this occasion, she got a standing ovation, seeing which she got a little emotional. Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the best award in the field of cinema, was given to him for the year 2021. This is the best award given in the field of cinema. The actress got emotional while dedicating her award to every department of the film industry. The previous winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke award was Asha Parekh with whom Waheeda Rehman shares a close friendship.
Waheeda said, The cinema veteran, who received a standing ovation from the A-list gathering as she walked to the stage, spoke about how filmmaking is a collaborative process. “I feel very honoured and humbled… But whatever I have achieved today, it is because of my dear film industry. Luckily, I got to work with top directors, producers, filmmakers, technicians, writers, dialogue writers, music directors and musicians,” Rehman said in her acceptance speech.
‘I feel very honoured, very humbled. Magar aj jis mukaam pe main khadi hu, yeh saara meri pyari industry ki wajah se. Mujhe luckily, bahut achhe, top producers, directors, filmmakers, technicians, dialogue writers, music directors aur sangeetkaar – sabka sahara mila. Sabne izzat di, pyar diya. Aur akhiri mein, makeup artists, hair aur costume banane waalon ka bhi bahut haath hota hai. Isiliye, yeh main award, apne priya film industry ke saare departments ke saath share karna chahti hu. Koi bhi ek insaan ek poori picture nehi bana sakta, un sab ko hum sabki zarurat hoti hai.’ Hence I want to share this award with all departments of the film industry.
One person cannot make an entire film, it’s a collective effort.”The five-member jury — comprising Rehman’s close friend and last year’s Dadasaheb awardee Asha Parekh, actors Chiranjeevi, Paresh Rawal, Prosenjit Chatterjee and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur — selected Rehman for the prestigious honour.
Rehman made her debut in Hindi films opposite Dev Anand in Guru Dutt’s 1956 film “CID” and went on to build a stellar career of over five decades, including classics “Pyaasa”, “Kaagaz ke Phool” and “Chaudhvin Ka Chand”, “Guide” as well as later hits such as “Kabhi Kabhie” and “Khamoshi”. Film actor-producer Devika Rani was the first Dadasaheb Phalke awardee. Other female artists to have received the honour are Sulochana, Kanan Devi, Durga Khote, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Asha Parekh. The announcement of the Dadasaheb Phalke honour coincided with the birth centenary of her “Guide” and “CID” co-star Dev Anand on September 26, 2023.
