NEW DELHI : This sengol has created controversy with historians noting that the Modi government’s claims that the sengol was a symbol of the British handing over power to independent India on August 15, 1947 – do not have evidentiary backing. “It is our good fortune that we have been able to restore the pride of the holy ‘Sengol’. Whenever proceedings start in this House the ‘Sengol’ will inspire us,” said PM Narendra Modi.

In  his maiden address in the new Parliament building and highlighted the need for the new and modern complex. He mentioned how there were requirements for the smooth conduct of the Parliament. The Prime Minister also noted the importance of the historic ‘Sengol’ in India’s journey so far and said that in the next 25 years, ‘we have to make India a developed nation’. He added that this aim is difficult and demanding, but ‘each and every citizen will work for it’ to make it a reality.
The new parliament building, even as 21 opposition parties boycotted the event at which he and not President Droupadi Murmu  took centre stage. In fact, President Murmu and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar were not even present at the event on Sunday morning as they had not been invited. The Congress has alleged that the country’s two highest constitutional functionaries were left out as Modi wanted this to be his ‘event’ and see his own name on the plaque on the new parliament building.
Modi reached the parliament building at 7:30 am, after which he and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla conducted a puja. After the puja, the prime minister prostrated before the ‘sengol’ that was handed over to him by Adheenam seers from Tamil Nadu, and then installed the sceptre in the new parliament. After the sengol was installed, Modi felicitated a group of construction workers who had been involved in building the new parliament.
Following the inauguration of the new Parliament building,  Modi on Sunday said the new building is going to fill all of us with pride and hope.  “As the new building of India’s Parliament is inaugurated, our hearts and minds are filled with pride, hope and promise. May this iconic building be a cradle of empowerment, igniting dreams and nurturing them into reality. May it propel our great nation to new heights of progress,” PM Modi wrote in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi cast shade at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the event as the police detained protesting wrestlers who gave a call for Mahila Mahapanchayat and tried to take out a march to the the newly inaugurated Parliament building demanding action against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. “The coronation is over – the ‘arrogant king’ is crushing the voice of the public on the streets!” he tweeted.  Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya too hailed the inauguration of the new parliament building, calling it a ‘proud moment’ for all Indians.

20 Opposition parties had announced that they would boycott the inauguration event of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying sidelining President Droupadi Murmu is not only a “grave insult but a direct assault on our democracy, which demands a commensurate response”.A mural in the new Parliament building depicting the influence of ancient Indian thought in its immediate neighborhood went viral on social media on Sunday with many claiming it represents the resolve for an Akhand Bharat, described as a “cultural concept” by the RSS.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) likened the architecture of the new Parliament building to a coffin, drawing a sharp response from the BJP, which said, people will bury the Bihar party in such a coffin in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. As the new building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ruling party in Bihar put out a tweet that showed a coffin and the new legislature building side by side and asked, “What is this?”
Ahead of the inauguration of the new parliament building the Press Club of India on Thursday, wrote to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla demanding unrestricted media entry to the lower house’s press gallery. Previous  “As the new Parliament building is being inaugurated on May 28, 2023, we would like to draw your kind attention towards the continuous and unrelenting restrictions imposed on the entry of journalists and reporters covering Parliamentary proceedings over the last several sessions,” the PCI said in a letter to Birla.
This morning, the new Parliament building was officially inaugurated  by Prime Minister Modi in a splendid celebration that involved various religious ceremonies including a havan and a multi-faith prayer. During a momentous occasion, the Lok Sabha chamber witnessed the placement of the ‘Sengol’ sceptre, a symbol of royalty during ancient Tamil kingdoms, in a special spot.
Sharad Pawar’s NCP said their primary objection was towards the prime minister presiding over the ceremony rather than the President of India. Speaking with media, NCP chief stated: “I saw the event in the morning. I am happy I didn’t go there. I am worried after seeing whatever happened there.” The lack of attendance from President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during the ceremony was questioned by Pawar.

There was a need for new Parliament. We also have to see that the number of seats and MPs will increase in the coming time. That’s why it was the need of the hour that a new Parliament is made.
When India moves forward, the world moves forward. This new building of the Parliament will call for the development of the world along with the development of India.
Whenever proceedings begin in this Parliament House, Sengol will continue to inspire us all. It is our good fortune that we have been able to restore the pride of the holy ‘Sengol’.
India is not only a democratic nation but also the mother of democracy. Our democracy is our inspiration, our constitution is our resolve. The best representative of this inspiration, this resolution, is our Parliament.
From Panchayat Bhawan to Sansad Bhawan, our inspiration is the development of our country and its people. Today, as we are proud of the construction of this new Parliament, it also gives me immense satisfaction when I think about the construction of homes for 4 crore poor people and 11 crore toilets in the country in the last 9 years.
When we talk about modern facilities in the new Parliament, I feel content we have constructed over 4 lakh kilometres of roads to connect villages in the country.
After slavery, India started its new journey after losing a lot. That journey has gone through many ups and downs, overcoming many challenges, and has entered the golden age of freedom.
Several years of foreign rule stole our pride from us. Today, India has left behind that colonial mindset. India is the mother of democracy. It is also the foundation of global democracy. Democracy is our ‘Sanskaar’, idea and tradition
We have 25 years of golden period. Together we have to make India a developed nation in these 25 years.
I am sure, the people’s representatives who will sit in this Parliament, with new inspiration, will try to give a new direction to democracy.
This new building of the Parliament will become the basis for the creation of a new India.
People of India have given themselves a gift for the Amrit Mahotsav.
This new Parliament building connects planning to reality, policy to realization, willpower to execution, and sankalp to siddhi.
This will be a medium for realizing the dreams of the freedom fighters. It will witness the sunrise of Aatmnirbhar Bharat and will see the realization of a Viksit Bharat. This new building is an example of the coexistence of ancient and modern.
We will have to move with a spirit of – Nation First. We will have to keep the path of duty above all. We will have to be an example with our conduct while constantly improving ourselves. We will have to tread our own path.
We witness the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat in every particle of this building.
PM Modi said while our Shramjivis have made the Parliament so grand, it is the responsibility of the Parliamentarians to make it divine with their dedication.
Every brick, every wall, every particle of this new Parliament House will be dedicated to the welfare of the poor.
