NEW DELHI : As corona virus cases continue to swell in the nation. India’s total of corona virus cases crossed the five lakh-mark on Friday after the country reported its highest single-day spike of over 17,000.
Delhi, which is grappling with the shortage of COVID-19 beds, reported 3,460 corona virus cases in the past 24 hours. The national capital’s corona virus total reached 77,240 on Friday. 2,326 people were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, which took the total recoveries to 47,091. With an addition of 63, the deaths count stood at 2,492.
Delhi, Chennai, Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Ahmadabad and Faridabad are 10 cities and districts have contributed to 54.47 per cent of the total cases in the country.
Delhi, earlier this month, overtook Mumbai to be the worst-hit city in India.India has the fourth-highest number of corona virus cases among 10 nations worst-hit by corona virus.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, with over 5,000 new cases, reached an aggregate of 1,52,765, while West Bengal and Tamil Nadu also reported their biggest single day COVID-19 numbers. The death count climbed to 15,301 with 407 new fatalities. This was the seventh day in a row that India registered over 14,000 cases. India is only behind US, Brazil and Russia.
Maharashtra today reported 5,024 COVID-19 cases and 175 deaths because of the infection. The state has a positivity rate of over 17 per cent and death rate of 4.65 per cent. There are 65,829 active cases in the state. Mumbai’s total of coronavirus cases reached 72,175 on Friday.

Tamil Nadu, which is ranked third on India’s coronavirus list, has reported 3,509 new cases, its highest single day spike, pushing the infection count to 70,977. With 45 new deaths, the total number of deaths in the state has reached 911.

West Bengal registered its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases on Friday, recording 542 fresh infections, to push the tally to 16,190 as the number of fatalities also jumped by 10, officials said. Andhra Pradesh too witnessed a highest single-day spike with 553 fresh coronavirus cases, pushing the state’s case count to 10,560.
According to the Centre for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, India still stands at the fourth position with the U.S leading the table with 24,24,054 cases followed by Brazil with 12,28,114 cases and Russia with 6,19,936.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday of the 26,000 positive cases in the National Capital, only 6,000 patients have been hospitalised as most of them have mild symptoms and are being treated at home.
He said that the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been increased by three times in the National Capital. He further said that at least 45,000 patients have been cured of the viral infection so far.
“Number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi is high but, the situation is under control and there is no need to worry. We’ve increased testing by three times but positive cases have increased by around 3000 per day only. Out of the total COVID-19 patients, approx 45,000 people have recovered,” said Kejriwal.

Of the 418 new deaths, 208 were in Maharashtra, 64 in Delhi, 33 in Tamil Nadu, 25 in Gujarat, 14 in Karnataka, 11 in West Bengal, 10 each in Rajasthan and Haryana, nine in Madhya Pradesh, eight each in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, five each in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttarakhand. Bihar, Goa and Jammu and Kashmir have reported one COVID-19 fatality each.
Of the total fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 6,739 deaths followed by Delhi (2,365), Gujarat (1,735), Tamil Nadu (866), Uttar Pradesh (596), West Bengal (591), Madhya Pradesh (534), Rajasthan (375) and Telangana (225).
