Covid-19: Delhi climb to 28,936 as 1,282 new infections reported; toll mounts to 812
NEW DELHI : Corona virus cases in India crossed 2.5 lakh on Sunday. India reported the highest single-day spike of 9,971 new COVID-19 cases and 287 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the country is now at 2,46,628.
Delhi is likely to see at least one lakh COVID-19 cases by end of June as per a projection made by the five-member committee formed by the Delhi government.
According to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which releases India’s official figures on Saturday, the country recorded a spike of 9,887 cases and 294 deaths in 24 hours since 8 am Friday, taking the total cases to 2,36,657 cases and toll from the virus to 6,642.
As per official figures, India is the sixth-worst affected country by COVID-19 after the US, Brazil, Russia, Spain and the UK, however, an unofficial tally put the total number of infections in the country at over 2.45 lakhs, surpassing Spain in less than 24 hours after it raced ahead of Italy. Spain so far has recorded 2,41,310 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
Maharashtra registered 3,007 new cases in the last 24 hours, the government said, and remains the worst state in the country with 85,975 cases. More than 3,000 people have died in the state home to India’s financial and entertainment capital Mumbai. The state has now surpassed China’s COVID-19 tally of 83,036 confirmed cases, a health official said.
Tamil Nadu reported 1,515 more COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths. The total number of cases in the state is now 31,667, including 269 deaths, according to the Health Department.
Delhi, which is also witnessing a spike as people resumed regular activities and shed caution, has reported 1282 more cases in the last 24 hours. Total number of cases in the National Capital is now at 28,936, including 17,125 active cases, 10,999 recovered/ discharged /migrated and 812 deaths,
Most of the new cases are in rural areas following the return of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who left cities and towns after the lock down in late March. In Gujarat, the numbers of cases so far stand at 19,592 with 1,219 deaths. Uttar Pradesh recorded the second-biggest spike in cases with 433 new patients that took the total to 10,536. On Friday, the state had reported 502 new cases.
“Thus, around 48.20 percent patients have recovered so far,” a senior health ministry official said. The health ministry said cumulatively 45,24,317 samples have been tested so far with 1,37,938 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
Of the total 6,642 fatalities, Maharashtra tops tally with 2,849 deaths followed by Gujarat with 1,190 deaths, Delhi with 708, Madhya Pradesh with 384, West Bengal with 366, Uttar Pradesh with 257, Tamil Nadu with 232, Rajasthan with 218, Telangana with 113 and Andhra Pradesh with 73 deaths.
