Delhi: Doctor commits suicide,accuses AAP MLA Prakash Jarwal
NEW DELHI : A Delhi doctor, 52, on Saturday committed suicide allegedly because of harassment by an Aam Aadmi Party MLA, the police said. In his two-page note, the man alleged the ruling party leader and his associate were trying to extort money from him, and they targeted his business interests when he refused to pay.
According to a source, the doctor was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his house. The Delhi Police has registered a case of extortion and abetment of suicide against the AAP legislator and his aide and others in the suicide case.
Delhi Police have taken the possession of the body and sent it for postmortem and an investigation has been launched into the matter.
A tenant noticed the body around 5.30 am and informed his family members, a senior police officer said.
The deceased, identified as Dr. Rajendra Singh, ran his clinic in Durga Vihar. For several years, Singh had leased out water tankers to Delhi Jal Board which were abruptly cancelled by the local MLA.
“I have been a broken man for the past 5 years. Prakash Jarwal and his associated Kapil Nagar (the accused) — gave me a death threat on July 18, 2019. In these 5 years, I also gave them Rs 5 lakh so that they do not hurt my family. I also sold a property at my village and gave the money to Kapil Nagar, which I received after selling.
However, he kept threatening me through Prakash. I can’t live my life in fear. I hold them accountable for my death. If there is law, both of them should be severely punished,” read the victim’s note.
The victim’s son alleged that his father used to run a clinic in the locality and was also in the business of water supply with the Delhi Jal Board since 2007, police said. A case of extortion and attempt to murder has been registered against the Prakash Jarwal, Kapil Nagar and others at Neb Sarai Police Station based on a complaint by the victim’s son, they added.
The police have also recovered a personal diary in which he apparently wrote an account of the alleged harassment. The victim in the diary entry wrote that he had rented the Delhi Jal Board his tankers, and Mr Jarwal was demanding extortion money for it.
He also said that when he refused to pay the MLA had the tankers removed from DJB service. He also wrote that he was getting death threats. In 2018, Mr Jarwal was convicted of intimidating a woman in a case.
