3 dead, 9 injured in crane accident on set of Kamal Haasan’s ‘Indian 2’
CHENNAI : Three assistant directors killed in accident on set of Kamal Haasan’s film Indian 2 that took place at EVP film city. According to PTI, Haasan was unharmed and the injured were undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The three killed were assistant director Krishna, art assistant Chandran and Madhu, a production assistant, production house Lyca said in a statement. “The men were inside the box-like structure on top of the crane when it crashed. It appears they were working on lighting for the shoot. The incident happened at 9:30 pm on Wednesday,” according to a police officer.
Director Shankar is making the sequel to the 1996 film, Indian. Police sources said it’s not known whether Shankar was at the site when the crane came crashing down. “Kamal Haasan was at another location inside the complex when the incident happened,” said a source who asked not to be identified.
“The accident is cruel. I lost three colleagues. More than my pain, the grief of their families would be immense. I share their sorrow. My deep condolences to them,” Kamal Haasan said. Indian 2, an action thriller, is being seen as Kamal Haasan’s film that dabbles in politics. The Tamil Nadu assembly election is due next year.
A case of negligence has been filed against the crane operator and the production manager, the Chennai police said. “We will fix responsibility based on the forensic report,” a police officer said.
Reacting to the incident, Kamal Haasan has called it “horrified.The 65-year-old actor said though he had “met with and crossed” many accidents, this was “very horrific.”

Both Kamal Haasan and Kajal mourned the demise of the crew members and tweeted about the mishap hours later. According to PTI, an assistant director was among the three killed in the accident on Wednesday night and a case has been registered against the crane operator, who is absconding, under various sections of the IPC, including causing death by negligence, police sources said.

Four seconds before, the director and cameraman moved away and I was standing nearer along with the heroine.
If I had gone nearer either way, today someone would be speaking here (in front of the media) instead of me. What I am saying is accidents are like tsunami. It does not know who is rich or who is poor,” Kamal Haasan said.Any industry has the duty to take care of its workers, he said and appealed to the film fraternity to take steps to protect the workers.
“There are accidents waiting to happen and we should ensure they don’t happen”, he added. The accident took place at suburban Nazrathpet when the crane employed to erect the sets crashed, police said.The production house of the film ‘Indian 2’ has also mourned the untimely demise of the team members.

The shoot was underway at a private cinema studio at the suburban Nazrathpet when the incident happened.
In a tweet on February 20, Haasan expressed his sympathies with the families of the deceased “Though (I) have met with and crossed many accidents, today’s mishap is very horrific. I have lost three of my colleagues,” he said in a tweet. “More than my pain, the grief of the family who lost them will be manifold. I take part in their grief as one of them,” he said.
Condoling the death of three “most hardworking” technicians, Lyca Productions said, “we are extremely saddened” over the mishap. The three killed were assistant director Krishna, art assistant Chandran and Madhu, a production assistant, Lyca said in a statement.
Lyca Productions said, “no words could ease what we truly feel.””We are extremely saddened with the unfortunate accident (that) happened on the sets of Indian 2 yesterday,” it said adding “We have lost three of our most hardworking technicians.”Lyca Productions expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
