Saffron ABVP loses on all 5 seats at Central University of Gujarat

Webp.net-resizeimage_80 (1)GANDHI NAGAR: The Student wing of the saffron BJP , Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP) lost all the five seats it contested in the student council election of the Central University of Gujarat. Elections were held for only five of the total 11 seats as independent candidates won unopposed in the rest.
All the five candidates fielded by Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad lost. Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association, Students’ Federation of India and Left Democratic Students Federation bagged one seat each.
The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Left Democratic Students Federation (LDSF) won one seat each while two were won by independent candidates.
BAPSA candidate Ashraf won 114 out of 167 votes in the School of Social Sciences, SFI’s Chittaranjan won in the School of Languages with 94 out of 166 votes and LDSF’s Prachi won 30 out of 38 votes in School of International Relations. Tarun Kumar Ahirwar and Vijendra Kumar won as independent candidates from the School of Environmental Science and the School of Library Science, respectively.
“This is the first time that SFI and LDSF are contesting elections in the university. Previously, only BAPSA used to contest the elections,” said Vikas Pathe, a student. The ABVP alleged that the university kept laboratories open on election day, January 22, while classes were supposed to remain closed, adversely affecting the voter turnout.
But according to students, these laboratories were in the science schools from where the independent candidates had already won uncontested. The ABVP also claimed that five of the six independent candidates who won uncontested were affiliated to it.

According to students, BAPSA candidate Ashraf won 114 of total 167 votes in Social Science, Prachi Lokhande of LDSF got 30 out of total 38 votes in International Relations and Chittaranjan from SFI got 94 out of total 166 votes. The other two candidates are Tarun Kumar Ahirwar from Environmental Science and Vijendra Kumar from Library Science of NSUI
“What is interesting is that while BAPSA has been winning for three years, SFI and LDSF fielded candidates for the first time and won seats,” said Sumedh, a leader as quoted by Ahmedabad Mirror. ABVP has issued a note stating the university has violated its own norms to help Left-leaning students win in the election.
They alleged that the varsity was supposed to keep classes closed on the voting day on January 22; however, the laboratory and others were functioning, preventing students from voting.
