NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the second day in a row, kept the focus snugly on the Congress, berating it over issues ranging from voting machines, Citizens’ list in Assam and the passing of bills in Rajya Sabha. Amid the crisis in the Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from the party chief’s post, he even mocked it over its handling of victory and defeat.
“The Congress neither could handle its victory, nor accept its defeat. That is from where their learning must begin,” the Prime Minister said in parliament. He then went into specifics. “You (Congress) just won elections in three large states… but look at the kind of news that are coming from there,” he said, indicating reports of spiraling factionalism from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh since the Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress, he said, should introspect, not blame others or claim that “democracy has lost”.Calling such statements “distressing” and “shameful”, he said, “Tell me, did India lose in Wayanad? Did India lose in Raebareli? What are they trying to say? That a loss for the Congress is a loss for India? Is India Congress, and Congress India? There is a limit to being arrogant.”
He shredded the recent remark of Ghulam Nabi Azad “wanting Old India back”, pointing out the many lacunae under the Congress governments, and took on the party over its stance on a 24-year-old’s death in Jharkhand after being beaten up by a mob.
Rubbing salt into the wounds of Congress after poll rout, PM Modi on Tuesday said the party and its leaders had “risen so high”, and wished them luck to go even higher. The remark, lacked with sarcasm, drew cheers from the NDA lawmakers.
“You have risen so high that you have been uprooted from the ground. Our aim is to remain closer to the people at the grassroots and strengthen them,” he said in Lok Sabha while replying to the customary motion of thanks on the President’s address.
Lashing out at the Congress over their “attitude” towards late Sardar Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I still believe had Sardar Patel been made the first Prime Minister of India, Kashmir issue would have been resolved. Sardar Patel lived and died as a Congressman. When we are paying tributes to the great leader, Congress has a problem.”
Speaking on the dire health conditions in Bihar and the alarmingly high deaths of children due to AES, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “The deaths in Bihar due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome are unfortunate and a matter of shame for us. We have to take this seriously. I am in constant touch with the state Govt and I am sure we will collectively come out of this crisis soon.”
PM Modi mocked the Congress party for overlooking Rajiv Gandhi’s acceptance of the NRC in the Assam Accord as he said, “You take credit for everything, will you not take credit for NRC? Rajiv Gandhi had accepted NRC in the Assam accord. Then the Supreme Court had to intervene. Also, Supreme Court directed us so we have implemented it. So, why are you not taking credit for this?
I think Ghulam Nabi Azad is having blurred vision, maybe he is seeing everything from political spectacles. Ghalib said something for such people ‘ta umr Ghalib ye bhool karta raha, dhool chehre pe thi, aaina saaf karta raha,” PM Narendra Modi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi further raked up the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots and said, “People accused of murder in 1984 are today big leaders in the Congress party.” I am sure there is no one in this house who will not like India to be part of the 5 trillion dollar economy club. On the recent incident of lynching in Jharkhand, PM Modi expressed his grief for the victim and his family. However, he dismayed at the Opposition for “holding the entire state” for Tabrez Ansari’s lynching. “We are all sad about the death of the mob lynching victim.
Taking a subtle jibe at Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who demanded “Old India” be returned, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Now they are slamming New India. Do they want old India back? Old India where cabinet decisions were torn in press meets, old India where Navy was used for personal trips, old India where numerous scams existed, old India which supported tukde tukde gang?”
PM said, “We do not have the majority in the Rajya Sabha. But, the voters now are very very aware, they not only know what is happening in Lok Sabha but also what is happening in Rajya Sabha, and they voted this time keeping these facts in mind.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Those opposing EVMs are not only opposed to EVMs. They have problems with technology, digital transactions, Aadhaar, GST, Bhim App. Why such negativity? This negativity was one of the chief reasons why some parties have not been able to win people’s trust.”

Then, speaking on the allegation put forth by the Congress on the BJP-led Narendra Modi government, the PM said, “By saying farmers sold themselves just because of Rs 2,000 scheme is an insult to farmers. I am shocked, even the media was abused. They said elections were won because of the media. What do such they mean? That media is on sale? Does same logic apply to Tamil Nadu and Kerala??”
Citing the constituencies where the Congress party won the elections, PM Modi continued to chastise the Rahul Gandhi’s led Grand Old Party. “Did India lose in Wayanad? Did India lose in Rae Bareli? Did India lose in Trivandrum, what about Amethi? What kind of argument is this? If Congress loses then does that mean India lost? There is a limit to arrogance. Congress could not win a single seat in 17 states,” he said.
