Rahul Gandhi files nomination for top party post
Rahul Gandhi has filed the nomination for the post of Congress president, paving the way for his much-awaited elevation and setting the stage for a contest against PM Narendra Modi ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A host of senior members of the organisation , including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were present at the event at the party headquarters in Delhi. Mr. Gandhi will take over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi, the longest serving Congress chief. She has helmed the party since 1998.
Ms. Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Singh were among the proposers of the candidature of Mr. Gandh. No one else filed papers till Sunday, according to Mullapally Ramachandran, chairman of the party’s Central Election Authority.
The process of filing oif nominations started on Friday. The last date for filing nominations is December 4. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 11, and the poll, if necessary, will be held on December 16 and the counting of votes will take place on December 19.
