HC stays pulling out of forces, Mamata gets relief in troubled Darjeeling
KOLKATA: Calcutta High Court stayed Centre’s move to withdraw seven company of Central Forces from Darjeeling. The High court in its ruling on Tuesday told Centre it could not withdraw forces till October 27. The State Government moved High Court on the issue of withdrawal of forces from hills on grounds that it needs more forces for election purposes.
Yesterday Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rolled out a fierce attack on Union Government for its unilateral decision. She said the BJP-led NDA “actually hatched a plot to get Bengal divided.’’ Incidentally, after killing of a police personnel by the alleged bodyguards of Bimal Gurung last week, things have changed for worse in troubled hills.
While Binoy Tamang took over leadership of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha from absconding Bimal Gurung, by allegedly shooting at police personnel, joins the camp which becomes politically untouchable. Incidentally, killing of a young police personnel created an air of rejection of GJM by the people in and around Darjeeling.
The observers here believe that with Gurung stealthily coming across the boarder with gunmen and provoking violence damned the peace in the hills. Though his former colleague Binoy Tamang is willing to continue with alternative and dialogue on the issue, Gurung’s actions only blotched the way for peace. “And more he gets rejected, he might indulge in more violence in the hills,’’ said another political outfit in Darjeeling.
