Mukul Roy decides to quit TMC, leaves all speculating, if he’s set to join BJP
KOLKATA: Months after getting his relation with party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee bitter, erstwhile most favoured man today announced his decision to quit party after Durga Puja. Roy’s action which climaxed into his quitting the party, however, left political observers not surprised but with a question if he’s set to join state BJP by taking with him a large number of party men
He grew up politically under Mamata Banerjee, now she decides to get rid of him for his hobnobbing with BJP, we do not expect him to do us any damage,’’ said a senior TMC insider on the condition of anonymity .However, at first it may not be a big issue even if expelled man joins BJP, may be with a few more, but if it happens this way TMC cannot immediately escape an unwanted political embarrassment, pointed out a political observer.
If the state BJP, which is still looking for a face they can project against Mamata, in elections, “feels elated at Roy joining the state organization, let them, but we fear none,’’ a TMC man said. Interestingly, state BJP which left the issue to party higher ups in Delhi, maintained if not silence but restrained way reacting to the development. “Only we would await our central leadership to react first,’’ said the senior state BJP leader.
Banerjee, who reigns the party and enjoys right to promote anyone or demote anyone she pleases, she isn’t upset and enjoying Puja holiday.Roy’s hobnobbing with Central BJP leaders, after he was cut to size organizationally by Mamata, actually worked his final (?) way out,’’ points a senior politician. Thus with Mamata’s political weight, Roy going out may not fetch much political profit for any party which takes him in.
Incidentally Mukul Roy happens to be the remaining very few old timers who all started with Banerjee TMC way back in 1997-98!
