NEW DELHI : After a dominating performance in the three-match Test series, India began their ODI campaign with a convincing nine-wicket triumph over Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Dambulla. While the five-match ODI series gave young Indian players a chance to prove their mettle, it also brought old war-horse MS Dhoni to fore.
Though Shikhar Dhawan’s blistering knock of 132 runs ensured the likes of Dhoni didn’t have to bat, the former Indian captain still made a mark with his lightening fast stumping of Lasith Malinga during Sri Lanka’s innings. Despite not getting an opportunity to bat, the Jharkhand skipper still trains hard in the nets to answer any calls of distress for his side in the limited-overs cricket.
Ahead of the first ODI, Indian captain Virat Kohli was hammering the bowlers in the net sessions. After smashing a few balls, Kohli made way for his predecessor as he walked into the nets to hit a few out of the park. That’s probably what Kohli was gesturing when Dhoni stepped in.
The Indian skipper welcomed the veteran batsman in the nets by waving his own bat in the air like a helicopter blade. Kohli’s gesture was a sign of the arrival of Dhoni who is known for his iconic ‘Helicopter Shot’. Kohli was surely telling everyone around to get prepared for Dhoni’s trademark hits.
The video of the incident was uploaded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on its official Twitter handle. It has received around 500 likes and garnered over 3,500 likes so far. After winning start in the ODI series, let’s hope that we all get to see Dhoni hit a few out of the park in the upcoming matches against Sri Lanka.ndtv.
