Indira Gandhi was a crusader for global peace: President Mukherjee
NEW DELHI : President Pranab Mukherjee today said, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a crusader for global peace, a just economic order and disarmament.
Delivering the Indira Gandhi Centennial Lecture in New Delhi, Mr Mukherjee said Indira Gandhi played a major role in shaping India and its destiny during a critical period in history.
He said the former Prime Minister championed the cause of poor and underprivileged and was committed to creating a poverty free India. Mr Mukherjee said the formidable leader did not shy away from the consequences of her actions during the Blue Star operation. He praised the courage and conviction of Indira Gandhi in supporting the liberation movement of Bangladesh.
In her address, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said Indira Gandhi was a remarkable woman, the likes of whom the country has never seen since. She said it is from her mother in law that she learnt about India, its culture, and values and imbibed her earliest political lessons.
