British PM to resign today; Theresa May to take charge as next Premier
LONDON: David Cameron will resign as British Prime Minister today to give way to Theresa May to become the next head of the Queen’s Government in the United Kingdom.
Mr Cameron will face his last Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons, before heading to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the Queen. Ms May will also visit Buckingham Palace to accept the monarch’s offer to form a new government.
After assuming office, Ms May, the current Home Secretary, will set about naming her own front bench team. Ms May was the only remaining candidate in the Conservative leadership contest following Andrea Leadsom’s withdrawal on Monday. Leadsom withdrew in a surprise move, much before the nine week campaign period.
Talking to media, Mr Cameron said he hopes that people will see a stronger country. He said it had been a privilege to serve the country he loves.
