Salem city witnessed a novel marriage
SALEM (T N): The picturesque Mookaneri lake in Salem city witnessed a novel marriage on Sunday evening.Meenachi Sundaram, a resident of Rasipuram and employee of a bank in Singapore, and Saranya, a MBA graduate and environmental activist from Salem, exchanged their marriage vows on a newly created island in Mookaneri lake.
As per the traditional practice that was in vogue centuries ago, the water in lake and trees (fire) on the bunds stood witness to the wedding.The couple also planted 25 saplings of different species on the 46th island in the lake, which was renovated and maintained by Salem Citizens Forum. The couple took a pledge to protect nature.
The Salem Citizens Forum to create awareness on the need to protect nature has been proposing to people to utilise water bodies in Salem to commemorate occasions like marriage, birthdays, and anniversaries.Karu. Palaniappan, noted director- actor from Chennai, presided over the marriage.
The crowd blessed the couple in the amphitheater on the bank of the sprawling lake. A large number of environmentalists felicitated the newly wed.
