Yakub’s hanging: Mumbai police detains 405 people under preventive provisions
MUMBAI: Mumbai police, on the edge ever since the date of Yakub’s hanging was declared, have detained 405 persons under various preventive provisions. All the detainees have criminal records.
Yakub Memon, the lone 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict facing gallows, was hanged to death today morning after his last ditch attempt to get a reprieve failed early this morning in the Supreme Court.Memon was hanged shortly before 7 am at the Central Jail in Nagpur.
Mumbai police have left no stone unturned in securing the city and have deployed around 24,000 personnel in maintaining the law and order. History-sheeters have been taken into preventive custody, and three burial grounds have been put under watch, anticipating Yakub’s burial in the city.
Mumbai police believe that there is a likelihood of communal elements trying to capitalise on Memon’s hanging. The body of Memon, who would have turned 53 today, would be handed over to his relatives who have been camping here in a hotel after completion of formalities.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is likely to make a statement on the issue in the state Assembly today. The Supreme Court decision came after a day of fast-paced developments on Wednesday when the court had upheld the death warrant and the President rejected Memon’s mercy petition a little before 11 pm on the advice of the government.
