“You killed Abhaya”, Mamata faced protests during her address at Kellogg’s College in UK.

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests during her address at Kellogg’s College in the UK. Demonstrators from the Left-backed Students’ Federation of India raised ‘Go away, Mamata’ slogans and displayed posters about the Abhaya rape case and alleged corruption. Banerjee responded to the protests, stating, ‘Please don’t do politics here, it is not a political state.’ The Trinamool Congress termed the protests a conspiracy, while the BJP claimed Bengal wants Mamata out.
Not ever in Kolkata or West Bengal, or anywhere in India Mamta did face such a fiery protest. But yesterday in the foreign soil of UK , CM Mamata had faced the unprecedented protest against her alleged cover up of R G Kar rape murder incident. At the KELLOG COLLEGE of Oxford University while delivering a lecture on ‘Empowerment of Women in Bengal and its Success’, following an invitation from the institution, her speech was disrupted by a number of protesters.
She was even accused of killing Abhyaa, the lady doctor in RG Kar ( her real name withheld). In side the college auditorium a section of the audience shouted at Mamata, “You killed Abahya…” . Hand written posters were displayed with an appeal, ” Meet the greatest cheats and criminals of Bengal.” They also reminded her “…Madam, This is not Kolkata.”

And obviously a huge uproar in Britain in this scale has created a real shock wave in Kolkata. As one senior opposition leader in the state said, ‘’ It would not irrelevant to mention that in most of the cases in Kolkata and West Bengal in the presence of CM if anyone dares to to raise any slogan or make any adverse comments or even raise any doubt or quiry and CM thinks it politically incorrect the person is immediately arrested by the state police. Few years back while Mamata is on district tour one common peasant was arrested as he dared to raise some query on the issue of state assistance in the presence of CM.” One veteran scribe of Bengal Media added , “ Even in a press conference if any reporter is seemed to be asking questions not too favourable to the TMC REGIME , he or she is rebuked and restrained by Mamata herself!”
Certainly the protesters were few in number but CM had to face a number of issues that is quite a taboo in side the corridor of state power and admistrative machinery of West Bengal. Not only barrage of protests disrupted her speech that paid tributes to the achievement of her adminstration as well as her narrative of the success of social justice program like lakshmir Bhandar or Kanya shree that Cm claimed benefiting the women of West Bengal. Also ex captain of Indian Cricket team Sourav Ganguly was verbally heckled by the protesters. Like one protester displayed hand written poster with the message that Sourav was endowed with a few hundred acres of precious land in the Jungle Mahal area of Bengal only in exchange of one rupee to build a steel plant. But after so many years where is that steel plant! To be noted in CM ‘ s recent Uk tour in search of investment in Bengal, Sourav or his wife Dona is much conspicuous by their presence and close proximity with Mamta.

On the other hand amidst the protest CM on RG Kar, the CM made it clear that the case was “sub judice” and the Centre (CBI) was now tasked with the probe. She informed the audience that This matter is not related to politics. The protesters are mostly from SFI-UK. On the same SFI-UK stated in x handle that they held a demonstration in Kellogg College, Oxford against Mamata Banerjee’s speech. They opposed her blatant lies by asking her for evidence of the social development she claims to pioneer.
Instead of allowing them to peacefully express opinions, police was called. State SFI Secretary Debanjan dey said in Kolkata , “Wherever goes Mamata, in any part of India, we will seek justice for Abhaya and expose cm”s lies. “Apart from the left, one or two lone voice person asked the West Bengal chief minister whether she was “anti-Hindu.” She replied while in chair she should not be divisive. Rather she must be inclusive and strive for the development of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christians and all.

She countered , “You have the right to speak, this is a democracy,” …Love you, brother. If you want to do politics, go tell your party in my state. I will send chocolate to you and your ideology.’’ But protesters went on dirupting her speech by raising the issue of post-poll violence in Bengal that resulted in hundreds of death. She also pulled out a black-and-white photograph from August 16, 1990, showing her injuries and bandages following a violent attack by CPM supporters at Kolkata’s Hazra crossing. Pointing at the picture, Banerjee added, “I was about to die. These are your atrocities.” “ Now, I will come twice each year to Oxford. You gave me strength and inspiration,” she added. After the intense session at the college, Mamata Banerjee had a walking tour of Oxford’s historic campus. She has also appealed to Oxford Unniversity to grant permission so that Kellog College can open a new Campus in West Bengal.
